Born to Ride Spending a lot of time on his family’s cattle ranch in South Texas, Jerry Lee Sewell was in the saddle as a toddler and was working cattle by the time he was in elementary school. As a child he was active in FFA and 4H, and remembers his first horse with great affection. Jerry Lee graduated with honors from Bellaire High School in Houston, and went to The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his undergraduate degree in government and languages. After receiving an Army ROTC commission and language and Special Forces training, Sewell was off to Vietnam for 28 months. He was wounded and came home, rehabilitated and sent back to war, this time for 16 months with the fabled 1st Air Cavalry Division. After coming home yet again after his fourth Purple Heart, Jerry Lee was forced by his injuries to take a medical discharge and find a new occupation. He chose the law, graduated from night school at the University of Houston and entered the legal profession.
Suits to Boots Through the next 15 years, Jerry Lee practiced law but kept a hand in the work he loved most — ranching and horse training. He studied the methods and philosophies of a variety of horsemen— Ray Hunt, Tom and Bill Dorrance, John Lyons and Craig Cameron, as well as Wolfgang May, formerly with the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. When he burned out on practicing law, he took a sabbatical and spent two years working as a ranch hand and horse trainer on large ranches in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. There he started colts, fixed problem horses and rode many long days working cattle.
A Multi-Faceted Equine Business When he returned to Texas, he was determined to make his way in the horse world, not so much as a competitor but as a teacher of horse and human. He settled initially in East Texas but has now manages a ranch near Rosanky, outside of Austin. Jerry Lee also runs a multi-faceted training, breeding, teaching, and consulting business, and travels extensively working to get a better deal for the horse through his clinic presentations.
America’s Multi-Lingual Trainer Jerry Lee has an unusual gift for language. This is can be a special advantage for non-English speaking equestrians, ranches using foreign workers or for overseas clients. He speaks Spanish, French, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Mandarin and Hmong and some Russian. You may contact him in any of these languages; he is capable of conducting a clinic in any of them except Russian.
New Riders, the life blood of the sport Jerry Lee considers it his special mission to pass on his extensive knowledge in multiple disciplines to new riders, teaching them how to ride, train, feed, and manage their horses, so that life is a “good deal” for the horse and rewarding for the rider. He believes a well trained, ridden, and managed horse will be happiest and of greatest service to its owner. He’s deeply passionate about helping others achieve that goal.
Training Services and Breeding Jerry Lee has trained and shown in a wide variety of equine events, and has a consulting business in breeding and stallion selection of cutting and reining prospects. In addition to matching up horses, he enjoys helping owners find just the right horse to fit their interests, budget, and experience level. Extensive contacts in the horse world make it possible to find clients just the right horse.
Sponsors Jerry Lee currently has no sponsors, due to his recent rehabilitation, but is now seeking offers in order to defray the expenses of his work.
