Horses Today
Except for a relatively small number of horses who work for a living on ranches and farms, pulling carriages, or as beasts of burden in Third World countries, horses today are a luxury item in the hands of owners who have them for recreation. Thus, we have come to a time when horses are owned mainly for pleasure, whether in the show ring or on the trail, instead of ownership out of necessity. Thanks to the efforts of people like the late, great Tom Dorrance, and other champions of fair treatment for the equine like Ray Hunt, the horse’s lot has not deteriorated just because he is no longer a necessity. Indeed, we probably are witnessing an all-time high in understanding and relating to the horse. I am pleased to be a part of this movement, and offer my Humane Horsemanship as a vehicle for participation in it.

What is Humane Horsemanship?

Humane Horsemanship is about studying the horse in his natural relationship with his fellows and using that information to improve the care, training and enjoyment of this magnificent and fascinating creature. By understanding and applying the horse’s three driving needs for sex, survival and comfort, I am convinced that we can become better owners, better riders, and better human beings. I invite you to share this information with me, whether you are a novice or a world champion rider, so that together we can give a better deal to the horse.

Safety, Patience, Excellence and Fun
My clinics are first about safety for everyone. They are about patience. They are about excellence in horse and rider. And they are about fun. After all, recreation is supposed to be about enjoying something, and by applying the things to be learned from Humane Horsemanship, horses can be enjoyed more because they will be better understood.
